William G. Bennett, 95 of Albion, IL passed away on May 6, 2021 at Linda E. White Hospice at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, IN

He was born, July 17, 1925 to Ellis and Amy (Guyot) Bennett in Albion, IL. On June 1, 1947 he married Velma Mundhank in Albion, IL.

William joined the Navy even before he graduated high school.  His dad signed so he could serve in WWII, so for the next 4 years, 1943 to 1947, he served his country overseas; in the battles, and then after the war. He returned home and met the love of his life and married her that same year. When the Korean Conflict began he served our country again for a couple of years.

His life was centered around serving God. He was a member of the Little Wabash United Methodist Church of rural West Salem, IL and then later Ellen Moore United Methodist Church in Fairfield, IL. Joshua 24:15 was his Motto, “… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

He was proud of his public service years, beginning with 3 years as Alderman, then 4 years, 1960-1964, as Mayor of Albion and his 40 years with Wayne White Coop, retiring in 1987.

He loved to bow hunt for deer, duck hunt and turkey hunt.  He enjoyed going camping with his family and made it a tradition to camp every Labor Day.  All the men did this until this last year, 2020, because of the pandemic, it was cancelled.

William was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Bennett; parents, Ellis and Amy Bennett; brothers, Allen Bennett and James Bennett; grandson, William G Bennett III.

He is survived by sons, William G. (Donna) Bennett Jr. of Evansville IN, Bruce K. (Glenda) Bennett of Marion, IL and Chris L. (Debbie) Bennett of Marion, IL; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 2 Great-Great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Little Wabash Cemetery Fund.

Visitation: 10:00 a.m. until time of service.

Bill and I were neighbors for almost 8 years and we checked on each other every day to make sure we were ok. Loved talking to him about the old days growing up in West Salem and he knew many of my dad’s family. I will always miss him and think of him with many good thoughts. Sorry for your loss, but he always said he was ready whenever the good Lord took him. Wilma

Bill served as an Elder for many years at Gospel Chapel in Bone Gap. His Biblical advice and counsel on any issues that came up was deeply appreciated. In my 30 years as a church pastor, I never met another person more dedicated to serving the Lord than Bill Bennett. He was a good friend and I miss him dearly.

I am sorry for your loss of losing your Dad! I remember that Bill saw the sister ship of my Dad’s get hit at Iwo Jima. There were two of these ships and they looked just alike. My Dad’s ship had just moved out of the
firing position to take on more ammo. and supplies and the sister ship moved in. Bill saw the sister ship get hit and your Dad thought it was the Salt Lake City which is the one my Dad was on. I think this was Jan,. 1945. Our Dads were part of the “Greatest Generation”!!!
