Will Mersinger, 74, of Highland, lllinois, passed from this life Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO, due to complications from congestive heart failure.
Will was born January 22, 1941 to Urban and Frances (nee Kapp) Mersinger in Highland, IL. On May 2, 1964 he married Rose Ann Beebe at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Joliet, IL.
Will was retired from Smurfit Stone Container Division after 44 years of exemplary performance. While working full time, Will also took much pride in farming the Mersinger family land South of Highland, IL. Preceding his tenure at Smurfit Stone, Will served in the US Army from 1961 to 1963 during the Berlin crisis, Cuban crisis, and Vietnam era, stationed at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico,
Will was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus member. He served as an Honor Guard with the Knights of Columbus (Council 1580). He was dedicated to singing at nursing homes each month as a Knight Time Singer, as well as working the bingo games, Will was also a member of the American Legion Post 0439, Highland, IL.
Will was a devout Christian and devoted to the Catholic church. He also devoted time to the Hospital Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as worked deliveries weekly for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Highland Historical Society.
Will was an avid reader, loving Husband, Father and Grandfather He enjoyed running, completed over 100 10K and 5K races, receiving trophies. He also completed 5 marathons after the age of 40.
Will enjoyed life to the fullest. He especially enjoyed good food and wine with great friends and family, landscaping/gardening, traveling, golfing, skiing, collecting fine time-pieces, woodworking, singing, dancing (especially cartwheels on the dance floor), and even took up learning electric guitar at the age of 72! He was also known for his insatiable search for the perfect car.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rose (deceased 11-5-2011), to whom he was married for 47 years; his parents Urban and Frances Mersinger, and his Brother, Jim Mersinger.
Surviving are his two daughters, Jodi Mersinger of Winfield, IL and Cyndi (Jim) Hunter of Austin, TX; two grandchildren Ashley and Brooke; his five sisters: Catherine Holtgrave of St. Rose, IL, Shirley (Ron) Massey, of Highland, IL,Mary Jane (Leonard) Landmann of Highland , IL, Rose (Al) Strieker of St. Rose, IL, Carol (Dave) Rakers of Highland, IL, all of whom are especially and greatly appreciated for the time they spent caring for Will in his times of need over the past few years; many nieces and nephews; many dear friends who are too numerous to mention and whom were tremendously appreciated by Will and his daughters.
Memorials may be made to Rose and Will Mersinger Scholarship benefitting St. Paul Education Foundation.
