Virginia E. “Ginger” (nee Heisner) Sanders, 74, of Pocahontas, IL, died Monday, December 5, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, after battling a lengthy illness.
Ginger was born November 2, 1942, to Nelvin “Nick” and Ella (nee Woodside) Heisner, in Pinckneyville, IL. On July 6, 1974, she married Carroll Sanders in Clayton, MO.
She earned a BS from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and a MS from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. She taught in the Granite City School District and Kaskaskia Community College for over 30 years. She was a member of the American Federation of Teachers.
Ginger was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church and had many friends at St. Gertrude Parish and also in the Alhambra area, as well as many members of the Sanders family and friends in the Navaho Nation in New Mexico. She was a kind, generous, and fun-loving person whose family and friends were blessed to have her in their lives.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Carroll Sanders, Pocahontas, IL; 2 stepchildren, Steve Sanders and Ellen Sanders; step grandson, Tony; Sister, Jan Place, Marano, Arizona; Brother, Don (Betty) Heisner, Pinckneyville, IL; 3 Nieces, Michelle (Craig) Girard, Taylorsville, Utah, Daphne (Ben) Hoskie, Marano, Arizona, and Brooke Heisner, Paducah, Kentucky; a Nephew, Blaine (Cynthia) Heisner, Pinckneyville, IL
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelvin “Nick” and Ella Heisner
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Visitation: Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, IL, and Friday, December 9, 2016, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, December 9, 2016, at 10:00 am at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL.
Interment: St. Bruno Catholic Cemetery.
