ROY L. SCHELL, 79, of Johnsonville, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He had been in Clay County Hospice Care, following a lengthy stay in the hospital due to multiple medical issues, not related to Covid-19.
Roy was born October 5, 1941 to Cecil G. and S. Elizabeth (Hilliard) Schell at their rural Cisne home. He attended school first in Claremont, Illinois and then in Johnsonville and Cisne, Illinois. He married Judi Karr September 3, 1961 at Johnsonville, Illinois and she survives. They had celebrated fifty-nine wedding anniversaries together.
Roy had worked as a machinist in Rockford, Illinois for five years and then moved back to the Johnsonville and Cisne area in 1966. He then worked as an engineering model maker, Indian Prairie Township Road Commissioner, farmer, and then as the owner of RL Schell Construction, for over thirty years. He was a member of the Orchardville Church, Flora Elks, Anthony Doherty 1111 Masonic Lodge, and the Clay County Shriners.
Roy enjoyed spending time with the family, mushroom hunting, and piddling on his tractor. One of his favorite sayings was “If I didn’t tease you, you would think I didn’t love you.”
Roy is survived by his wife Judi Schell of Johnsonville, Illinois; three sons Steven (Jamie) Schell of Tuscumbia, Alabama, Kevin Schell of Rinard, Illinois and Scott (Stephanie) Schell of Flora, Illinois; eleven grandchildren Rachael Ellis (Joshua Greenwood) of Cisne, Illinois, Samantha (Craig) Richardson of Fairfield, Illinois, Logan (Bree) Colbert of West Salem, Illinois, Corey (Mandy) Deters of Flora, Illinois and Amanda Schell of Johnsonville, Illinois, Hayle (Steve) Gray of Flora, Illinois, Jessica (Ryan) Ruble of Cisne, Illinois, and Heather (Zach) Rice of Xenia, Illinois, Chris (Beth) Deters of Kentucky and Ashley (Travis) Arnold of Louisville, Illinois and twenty-four great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters Janice Lowe of Cisne, Illinois and Betty (Jim) Kasten of Rockford, Illinois and two brothers Charles (Helen) Schell of Oregon, Illinois, and Jerry (Glenda) Schell of Cisne, Illinois.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers John Eugene, Ivan, and Phillip Schell, one daughter-in-law Judy Schell, one grandson Cecil Schell, and one great granddaughter Delilah Ellis.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Hosselton-Meridith Funeral Home. Masonic service will be at 2:00pm at the funeral home prior to service. Burial will be in Cisne Cemetery. Visitation will from 12:00pm until the time of service at 2:00pm.
