Roman B. Korte, 90, of Highland, IL, died Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Highland Health Care Center.

Roman was born December 19, 1932, to Anton S. and Ida C. (nee Tebbe) Korte, in Highland, IL.

Roman was born and raised on the family farm in rural Pierron.  He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1951. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Pierron, and attended St. Paul Church in Highland, where he attended Mass daily, and participated in Perpetual Adoration at the Hospital Chapel. As strong as his faith was, he would talk freely about his conservative values, and as quoted by a dear friend, “He was the most devoted Catholic I’ll ever know.”

He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and upon graduation went to work for Western Electric, and after his time in the military, he worked for AT&T in Chicago, as an Electrical Engineer. He lived in various places throughout his life; including Ascension Island and New Jersey.  During his time in the United States Air Force, he used his Electrical Engineering degree to its fullest capacity.

Upon his retirement, Roman returned to the family farm in rural Pierron, where he was a dedicated farmer and gardener.  While he loved to sell his produce, Roman made sure to abundantly supply the food pantry with his vegetables; He lived to help the poor.  In later years, he had Keith Frey to help him in the farming operation and was thankful for his assistance.  In his younger years Roman like to hunt, fish, and always enjoyed chopping wood, a task he also enjoyed later in life with his great nephew, Jimmy.  He liked to socialize and could often be found with the morning McDonalds Coffee club as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton S. and Ida C. Korte; sisters, Josephine Pacer, Frances Griffin, Lucille Korte, Elizabeth “Betty” Korte; brothers, Leonard Korte and Cornelius Korte.

Roman is survived by his nieces and nephews, Pat (Jim) Hoffmann, Carol Georgetta, Jim (Mary) Pacer, Scott (Paula) Griffin; great nieces and nephews, Mindy (Matt) Miller, Jimmy Hoffmann, Connie Georgetta, Joey Georgetta, Michael Georgetta; six great great nieces & nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul School for the Garden Guardians Project, or in the form of Masses.

I feel lucky to have met Roman. I live near the church and meet Roman as he was heading home. Stopping to check the corn, we struck up a conversation and talked for a while. I could tell Roman was a really nice man. He always waved as he drove by. Again, I feel better to have made a friend like Roman. This world needs more people like Roman Korte!

I don’t remember when I met Roman, but I was just a kid or even younger. My mom would stop by his farm and get eggs and I always loved seeing all of his cats in the barn! Many years had gone by that I ended up not seeing Roman, but then in the the last couple years I came over to Pierron and saw him at Mass and then also at Adoration and Benediction. I loved seeing him kneeling and so devoutly adoring Our Lord Jesus, and his smile and joy in life! He will be missed.
