    Roderick J Hill Sr. Born September 28, 1942, in Teaneck, New Jersey. Passed away July 18, 2023 at his home in Maryville, Illinois surrounded by family. He was 80.

    He is proceeded in death by the love of his life Joan Hill (nee. Alex). His parents Dorothy and Roderick Sutherland Hill, sister Barbra and brother Kenneth.

    He leaves behind 3 children. Michele (Cheryl) Hill, Debbie (Mike) Shah (nee. Hill) and Ricky Hill. As well as 7 grandchildren (Vincent (Casey) Adler, Cassandra (James) Townsend, Kathryn Hill, Alec (Aly) Fadler, Zachary Hill, Tyler Shah, and Holly Shah. 13 great-grandchildren (Hunter, Wyatt, Seth, Katilyn, Scott, Brandon, Chloe, Elijah, Isaiah, Axel, Adeline, Charleigh, and Niko) As well as 1 great-great granddaughter (Celeste). His sister Elaine Hendershot, and a very large loving extended family.

    A true Jersey boy, he grew up in Richfield Park, New Jersey. Where he graduated High School in 1960. He served in the United States Navy from 1960-1963 stationed at NAS Miramar, California. During his service he achieved the rank of Petty Officer, Second Class. Shortly after his time in Navy he became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 268 where he would continue to work until his retirement in 2004.

    A well-known custom knife maker as well as avid golfer helped keep his hands busy throughout the years. But by far he enjoyed spending time with his family the most. There was never a shortage of laughter when Rick was around, he always had a smile on his face and the most positive attitude. He was a wonderful man and will truly be missed by those who knew and loved him.

    Interment: Friday, July 28, 2023, 11:00 AM, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

    There is a unique sorrow to losing a loving parent. Even though the end of their journey is in the presence of family and those close to their heart, their passing/the sudden absence lances one’s soul.

    My sincerest condolences to everyone. Rick was one of my apprentice instructors, a mentor and a friend. I had the pleasure of working with him since 1980. Rick and my father had worked together since Rick was an apprentice. Rick made 2 knives for me years ago that I will always treasure. God Bless and Godspeed my friend…
