Robert William Schaefer “Rock”, 80, of Lebanon, Illinois peacefully passed away Friday, November 23, 2012.

Surviving are Shirley “Sug” nee Sydnor Schaefer, his wife  of 56 years, his three daughters,  Shelly Schaefer Hinck (Ed), Sherry Schaefer Blythe (Rick), and Susan Schaefer Green (Jeff), seven grandchildren, Ashley, Robert, and Alexandra Hinck, Kyle Blythe, and Gordon, Spencer, and Marshall Green, and his nephew, Bob Schmidt. Rock was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Marietta nee Harms Schaefer, brother, Edgar “Slick” Schaefer, and two sisters, Ruth “Tutie” Schaefer and Doris nee Schaefer Schmidt.

Rock was a graduate of Lebanon High School. He received his baccalaureate degree from McKendree University and his Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Lebanon, IL, the Singers Association, and a Korean War veteran. Rock was a well-regarded teacher at Triad High School, Troy, Illinois for 39 years where he taught bookkeeping, typing, and drivers education. He served as the sports announcer for the Triad High School football team for many years.

An avid sports fan, Rock especially enjoyed watching McKendree University football and basketball games and following the Kansas Jayhawks. He was a proud member of the McKendree chain gang for 17 years. Rock and his wife, Sug, were strong supporters of the arts and the Hettenhausen Fine Arts Center, McKendree University.  He was known for his great sense of humor, his walks throughout town and the university campus with his dogs, Miller and Woody, and the many golf balls he collected and sold. However, he will be remembered most for his devotion to and love for his wife and their three daughters (Rock’s rat pack). He was deeply loved by his family; they will treasure the many memories of past family vacations, swim meets, and family holidays. He will be truly missed.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 PM Thursday, November 29, 2012 and on Friday, November 30 from 10:00-11:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Lebanon, IL, with memorial services at 11:00.  Memorials may be given to the McKendree Bearcat basketball team, McKendree Bearcat football team, the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, McKendree University, and the First United Methodist Church of Lebanon, IL.
