Mary M. Hobbs, 81, of Marine, IL, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, O’Fallon, IL.
She was born on May 8, 1942, in Pierron, IL, to Otto and Gertrude (nee Feldt) Baumgartner. She married the love of her life, Charles Hobbs, on February 8, 1964, at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Troy, IL.
Mary has been living in Marine since 2000, moving from St. Jacob, IL. She graduated from Triad High School in 1960 and went on to receive her certification as a Certified Nurses Assistant from Belleville Area College. Mary worked a total of 20 years for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital until her retirement in 2000, doing 10 years in the hospital and 10 years in their home health department. She also enjoyed working at the family business, Marine Mower and Saw Inc., in Marine, IL.
Devoted to her faith, Mary was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine and passed that faith down to her children. After her retirement, Mary and Charles spent many years traveling. One of her favorite places was Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, MO. In her younger years, Mary played on the softball team and belonged to a bowling league. She enjoyed cooking, reading, volunteering at the church picnics, and spending time with her family. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, Mary will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Gertrude Baumgartner; son, Charles Lee Hobbs; grandson, Johnathan Hobbs; and brother, Leonard Baumgartner.
Mary is survived by her husband of 59 years, Charles Hobbs; sons, Dennis (Cheryl) Hobbs, David (Christine) Hobbs, Jeffrey (Julia) Hobbs, Kurt (Angela) Hobbs; grandchildren, Jason (Leslie), Trisha, Philip (Nicole), Donnella, Jacob (Laura), Justin (Rachel), Matthew; 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Esther Miller, Jerome Baumgartner, Henry Baumgartner, Otto Baumgartner, Paul Baumgartner, Christina Friess, Anna Mersinger, Agnes Raine, Theresa Deak; many beloved nieces and nephews; best friends, Ron and Joan Voyles.
Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
