  • Full Obituary

Luke M. Hagaman, 55, of Summerfield, IL, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at Barnes Jewish Siteman Center, St. Louis, MO.

If you are reading this, then you know I have met my demise. I was born in the usual fashion in a hospital that no longer exists in Mansfield, MO on March 19, 1961. I left this worldly domain on October 29, 2016 due to advanced lung cancer that spread to other organs. Now, before any of you anti-tobacco warriors jump up on your soapbox and start spouting off about my use of those evil cigarettes, there is one thing you should know; and it’s a doozy: I didn’t smoke! Yet, that’s the one that jumped up and bit me – hard. I think it’s because God, at least the one I know, not only has a sense of humor, but He takes great delight in keeping me on my toes. Touche, Lord! You got me on that one and I’m afraid I don’t have a come-back.

My parents were Charlotte and Andrew Hagaman. My siblings were, in order of appearance, Roberta (Bertie); Andrea, and the youngest, Caroline. I’m sure there are a few of you in Douglas County who have fond memories of my father. It’s time to set the record straight. I know that in your eyes good ol’ Andy Hagaman was an icon in the community; never too busy to lend a helping hand. However, that was not the person we (Mom, Andrea, Caroline, and Yours Truly) knew. The atmosphere of domestic violence and fear had reached such an extent that on one beautiful late Spring/early Summer morning in 1978 we realized that we had three options: 1) divorce him; 2) kill him; and 3) be killed by him. We unanimously chose the least offensive option, that being the first one on the list.
