      Lois June Harper, 96, of Albion, IL passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at her home.

      She was born June 15, 1927 in Leech Township, Wayne County, IL to Charles and Mary Jane (Tackett) Headley. She attended nearby Chandler grade school and graduated from the two-year high school in Golden Gate, IL in 1943. She then completed her Junior and Senior years at the Albion Community High School, graduating in 1945 at the close of World War II.

      Lois was married to Donald P. Harper on June 19, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel, IL. In 1949, they moved from Albion to Carmi where they operated the Nu-Way Cleaners for Howard Draper for 10 years. In 1962, they moved back to Albion where they both worked for Consumers Gas Company, which had just extended their service into Edwards County. Lois served as collector in the Albion office for 29 years before her retirement in 1992.

      Lois was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and was an active member, as long as her health permitted, of the First United Methodist Church in Albion for over 50 years. In 1980, she was an organizing member of the Bonpas Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; serving as its treasurer for 25 years. She was a life member of the Edwards County Historical Society. Lois was also a member of the Albion Women’s Bowling Association for over 30 years. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don; three sisters, Freda Jones, Marjorie Allan, and Elsie Hooper; two brothers, Alan Headley and Lester Leon Headley; and a half-sister, Elva (Nesler) Bond.

      Lois is survived by her children: Donna (Steve) Smith of Xenia, IL and Terry Harper of Albion; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Dale) Kooyenga of Brookfield, WI; four great-grandchildren: Grant, Taylor, Quin, and Ada Kooyenga also of Brookfield, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

      Private family services will be held with David Shain officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Albion. Ingram-Meridith Funeral Home of Albion is in charge of arrangements.

      She was a great aunt to her nieces and nephews. We always had a wonderful time visiting with her and Uncle Don. They will both be missed. My sincere condolences.
