Four days ago, I received sad news about one of my uncles passing away.

My Uncle Jerry Nichols, a resident of Albion, Illinois, who was an Army and Illinois Army National Guard veteran passed away at the age of 74. He was very proud of his service to our country. My uncle deserved to be proud of that service.

I am glad that my 83-year old father, his oldest sibling and brother Donald Nichols, and I got to visit with him on our trip this past October to Illinois for what was my father’s last high school reunion (his class has decided that they are at too advanced of an age to travel to a reunion).

My Uncle Jerry have left behind many fond memories of time spent with him as a child and adult. He always was witty and loved to talk – of course all of us Nichols have the gift of gab.

My Uncle Jerry loved our country, his town, and most of all, his family.

Our family can rejoice in knowing that his soul is alive and well, free of pain and suffering, in Heaven. We can also rejoice that we will be reunited with him when it is our time leave our mortal shells and ascend to eternal life in Heaven.

One of the last nice gestures I had the honor of doing for my uncle was to purchase and send to him, by way of his oldest daughter, a U.S. Army flag and the flag of the Army’s Signals Corps. Those flags will sit next to his ashes in a place of honor at my cousin’s home.

With this poem, I wish my Uncle Jerry’s wife, daughters, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great grandchildren peace in their hearts as they say their final goodbye to my dear uncle. This is my final goodby to my uncle. I pray that my Uncle Jerry’s extended family take comfort in knowing that we will all see him again someday.

Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way.
      ~Rabindranath Tagore

Rest well Uncle Jerry. We shall all be with you again someday. In the meantime, watch over us, smile, laugh, and enjoy your time with family members who have gone before us.
