Jerry Mason, 77, of Highland, IL, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, at St. Louis U. Hospital.
Jerry was born on February 11, 1937, in E. St. Louis, IL. He was raised by Jim and Alice Steiner since he was 4 months old. On November 22, 1958, he married Jacque Curtis at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in E. St. Louis, IL.
Jerry was a Golden Glove Champion in E. St. Louis in the early 50’s, a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, a 32nd degree Mason, an active member in the MACLIBO Circus unit for the Shriners, Past Worthy Patron for the White Shrine of Jerusalem 13 times, Past Worthy Patron for the Eastern Star. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Education from SIU Carbondale, IL.
After retiring from M.A.R.S. after 30 years, he has worked for the Meridith Funeral Home in Highland, IL. In his retirement, he traveled all over the United States including the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Also, back in the day, he had Harley Davidson motorcycles and loved to ride. But above all, his family meant the most to him—his 3 daughters, his granddaughters, his grandson, and his great grandchildren. He was very nurturing and played an active role in all three of his daughters’ lives. He was the life of the party and loved to tell jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Jacque Mason, Highland, IL; 3 daughters, Vicky Strong, Carlyle, IL, Sherry (Bart) Alexander, Highland, IL, and Jammy Miener, Highland, IL; 8 grandchildren, Amy Thomas, Erica Kayser, Roxanne (fiance Johnny Lawson) Gillespie, Jessica (Justin) Jorgenson, Trevor Horvath, Cortney Miener, Samatha and Nick Alexander; 10 great grandchildren, Timmy, Karley, Natalie, Jayden, Gavin, Lexi, August, Marley, Kendyl, Elijah; 1 brother-in-law, Ron Curtis; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Jim and Alice Steiner; l brother, Edgar Mason (twin); 4 sisters, Clara Bandy (twin), Pauline Buechler, Rosemarie Gaines, Vivian Shultz; 1 niece, Mary Kay Combs; 1 uncle, Jerry Curtis.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Visitation: Friday, December 5, 2014, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, at Highland Hope United Methodist Church, Highland, IL.
Memorial Service: Friday, December 5, 2014, at 12:00 pm, at Highland Hope United Methodist Church, Highland, IL.
