James Robert Arbuthnot, aged 72, of Highland, Illinois, embarked on his final journey on October 4th, 2023. Born on the enchanting Christmas Day of 1950 to Marie (Putnam) and Charles F. Arbuthnot in Wood River, Illinois. James was celebrated for his intellect, gentle nature, and boundless generosity.

He leaves behind cherished memories and is survived by his devoted brother, Steven C. Arbuthnot (Jane) of Naples, Florida, and loving sister, Sarah Riggs (Tim) of Vandalia, Illinois. He is also fondly remembered by his niece, Lindsey Clancey (Bob), his nephew, Steven Ryan Arbuthnot (Julia), and his grandnephews, Andrew and Teddy Clancey. James was blessed with a multitude of cousins, connecting him to a vast network of family.

James peacefully concluded his journey at his residence, surrounded by the comforting presence of his family, friends, and his beloved feline companions, Alex and Rosemary, following a courageous battle against cancer.

Jim's educational journey began with his graduation from East Alton Wood River Community High School in 1969, followed by his successful pursuit of a degree from Blackburn College in 1973. His professional path led him into the realm of information technology, where he left an indelible mark. He lent his talents to esteemed organizations such as the Trailer Train, Jewel Foods, Sprint, the State of Illinois, and his most enduring tenure at Heller Financial in Chicago. Throughout his career, Jim's dedication and versatile skills in both mainframe and network applications earned him numerous accolades and the respect of his employers.

Beyond his professional life, Jim was an ardent supporter of the Save the Prairie Society in Westchester, Illinois, and the Westchester Historical Society. He dutifully served on their boards for over three decades, tirelessly contributing to the preservation of local history and natural landscapes.

From a young age, Jim displayed a passion for learning, excelling academically and pursuing his musical talents by mastering the trombone. He delighted audiences with his music as a member of the Wood River Municipal Band. In a testament to his exceptional talent, he joined the professional jazz orchestra Ambassador East during high school, performing at prestigious venues like the Sheridan Jefferson Hotel, Chase Park Plaza, Augustine’s, and Fischer’s restaurant. His dedication and artistry were rewarded with the prestigious John Phillip Sousa Award.

Jim's interests extended to the world of sports, where he avidly followed both St. Louis and Chicago teams. He was a lifelong enthusiast of Star Trek and science fiction literature, immersing himself in tales of the cosmos. His fascination with military history, from World War II to modern times, further enriched his diverse interests.

A collector at heart, Jim began his love affair with comic books in the late 1950s, amassing a meticulously preserved collection of 5,000 copies, each lovingly encased in individual plastic sleeves. His passion for preserving the past extended to his patriotic spirit, as he held an unwavering love for his country.

Jim was known for his unwavering support of noble causes and not-for-profit organizations. He was ever eager to contribute to endeavors that aimed to make the world a better place.

Many years ago, I met Jim at work. He was a very talented and affable co-worker and friend. We would visit regularly and in later years we switched to weekly phones calls where we discussed world events and reminisced. He will be deeply missed.
    My sincere condolences.
