James L. Swearingen, 83, of Highland, IL, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024, at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, IL.
He was born on January 17, 1941, in Decatur, IL, to Richard and Phyllis (nee Newsome) Swearingen. On February 11, 1966, he married Patricia Smith in Decatur, IL.
Jim has been living in Highland since 2018. He was born and raised in Decatur, IL, and attended Eisenhower High School. In 1958, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country proudly for 3 years. He loved sharing stories of his days in the Marines and the time he spent Easter on Mt. Fuji in Japan.
While living in Decatur, Jim was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion. He liked to golf, play Bingo, and was an avid bowler. He was well known on the bowling circuit and won many championships throughout his years. Jim was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Illinois Basketball. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Swearingen; parents, Richard and Phyllis Swearingen; son-in-law, Dennis Hilderbrand; brother, Phil; and sister, Linda.
Jim is survived by his children, Christine Hilderbrand, Decatur, IL, Rick Swearingen, Mt. Zion, IL, and Jody (Bob) Melosi, Highland, IL; grandchildren, Keri, D.J., Jason, Tiffany, Ryan, Ben, Jenna, and Justin; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Connie and Patricia “Patty” Garner; and multiple nieces and nephews.
