Evelyn I. Rommerskirchen, 83, of Pocahontas, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at her home, with her family by her side.
She was born on June 28, 1939, to Walter and Verna (nee Keilbach) Merkle, in Highland, IL. On September 27, 1958, she married David Rommerskirchen Sr., at the Pocahontas United Methodist Church.
Evelyn was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, and later, Pocahontas United Methodist Church.
She lived in this area all her life, attending Highland Public Schools in her younger years, later graduating from Highland High School. She worked in various industries throughout her life, from restoring furniture for individuals and antique shops, to working for Bauer Fur Company, combing hides to prepare for furriers to Hudson Bay Furrier, Thunder Bay, Ontario. She also worked at Highland Supply, making easter grass and baskets, later working privately in the home health sector.
Until her boys were teenagers, she stayed at home, raising them, running Cub Scouts, and becoming a neighborhood mom to many kids. Evelyn loved to visit with people, always enjoying time with her neighbors, along with a little friendly gossip. Her drink of choice was always coffee, in a mug or glass; she drank it all day long.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Merkle and Verna Riggs; husband, David Rommerskirchen Sr.; siblings, Annie VonHatten, Florence Lebegue, Mary Manville, Waldo “Bud” Merkle; and brother-in-law, Danny (Paul Mueller) Rommerskirchen.
