Elizabeth L. “Betty” Shimer (Nee Gramlich), 81, of Highland, IL, died Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO, surrounded by her family.
Betty was born August 21, 1932, to Julius J. and Lena (Nee Hambee) Gramlich, at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, IL. On February 23, 1952 she married Donald L. Shimer in Highland, IL.
Betty was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL. She liked to ride horses in horse shows and lead the Memorial Day Parade on horseback. She started Forget-Me-Knot Shop in 1983, with her niece, Nancy White, in a garage on Poplar St. They moved up to Main St. where it is today. She then went to work at Giving Tree for 14 years before retiring. She enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter, holiday get-togethers, and her flowers. She liked to play cards and shop with her friends.
She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Shimer, Highland, IL; 2 sons, Daniel L. (fiance’ Kathy Hueter) Shimer, Highland, IL, Mark T. (Laurie) Shimer, Alhambra, IL; grandchildren, Wendi A. (Tyson) Zobrist, Kara K. (Joe) McGee, Colten D. Shimer, Cody J. Shimer, Ethan J. Shimer, Jared D. Shimer; 1 great-granddaughter, Adilyn B. Zobrist; sister-in-law, Ann Gramlich; longtime friends, Lucille (Leonard) Schreiber; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julius J. and Lena Gramlich; 2 brothers, James Gramlich, Thomas Gramlich; mother-in-law, father-in-law, Lyle and Arline Shimer.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
Visitation: Tuesday, September 24, 2013, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and Wednesday, September 25, 2013, from 8:00 to 9:30 am at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial: Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL.
