- Full Obituary
Dita J. Rivero, 90, of Collinsville, IL, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, peacefully at her home.
She was born February 9, 1933, in Cullman County, AL, to James O. and Maybelle (nee Johnson) Hamner. Dita liked to announce (loudly) that February 9th was coming while putting away the Christmas things.
Dita loved to spend time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She livened up many a room, sometimes argumentatively, or at least in volume and fun. Raised in ‘Bama, she loved to chat with anyone and everyone, and “never met a stranger”. Dita played piano and sang, loved animals, and her home and yard. She traveled the world but was always happy to come home, to the many strays (animals and people) that she took in throughout the years. She grew up during the Depression picking cotton and told stories of her childhood with five siblings and neighbors like Mr. Wilson and his bull. Dita moved to St Louis after college: two sisters led the way. She married, had five children, and after divorcing, raised them mostly on her own. She was a strong, proud, true southern matriarch, and will be missed dearly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James O. and Maybelle Hamner; siblings, Carolita Deter, Paula Griffin, Rebecca Callis.
Dita is survived by her children, Rolando “Rody” (Lara) Rivero, Guillermo “Gitsy” (Kandiee) Rivero, Roxanne “Rocki” Rivero, Ramona (Brad Gates) Rivero, Beckie (Joe) Werner; grandchildren, R.D., Sean, Erin, Mari, Josh, Ethan, Shane; great-grandchildren, Blake, Jaycee; siblings, Don Hamner, Judy Black; nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.
Memorials may be made to Spencer Pet Rescue.
Visitation: Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at Kassly-Meridith Funeral Home, Collinsville, IL.
