  • Full Obituary

Charles J. Carson, 91, formerly of Pocahontas, IL, passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, with his family by his side.

He was born January 12, 1931, to Harold Charles and Cornelia Emily (nee St. Onge) Carson in St. Louis, MO. He married the love of his life, Velda P. Taylor on January 15, 1950, in Greenville, IL.

Charles loved his family more than anything; he was a treasured husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa. He was a handyman, it wasn’t a good day for Charlie unless he was fixing something: mowing grass, pouring concrete, or working up a good sweat. He was the “go-to” man in Pocahontas and could fix just about anything, he always had the right tool for the job. Charlie was a dependable, hardworking, respectable individual and resident of Pocahontas. He was a beacon in his community and the surrounding counties, he always had a smile on his face and only positive things to say.  Charles loved to talk to his friends and neighbors, he had never met a stranger only made new friends. He served his community by teaching Sunday school at Pocahontas United Methodist Church and was the President of the Robinson Cemetery Association for 10 years. He was a member of the Masons of Gordon Lodge #473 A.F. & A.M. Charles worked as a laborer for the Granite City Local 397 for over 50 years. He was service manager for Genteman Chevrolet for 25 years, starting in Pocahontas and ending in Highland. In his retirement, he loved mushroom picking, bowling, fishing, and barbecuing every Sunday for his family. Anyone who knew Charlie knew about his talent for witching water, power lines, and even graves. Charlie was a great man and will be dearly missed by many.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold C. and Cornelia Carson.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Velda Carson, formerly of Pocahontas, IL, currently residing in Greenville, IL; children, David (Jean Marie) Carson, Bent, NM, Deborah (Delmar) Smail, Hillsboro, IL, Cheryl (Steve) Mardis, Bloomington, IL, Valerie (Jeff) Higginbotham, Florissant, MO, Veronica (George) Schaufelberger, New Orleans, LA; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.

Memorials may be made to Robinson Cemetery Association or Pocahontas United Methodist Church.
