Charles A. McCune Sr. 90, of Highland, IL formerly of Troy, IL born November 12, 1919 in E. St. Louis, IL died Sunday, March 14, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Belleville, IL.
He spent his early childhood on a farm in Nashville, IL before his family moved to E. St. Louis, IL where he attended school. He worked for several years for Western Union delivering telegrams. He joined the US Army on March 5, 1943 serving as a medium artillery gun crewman in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Eugope, until his discharge in 1946. He joined the VFW as an at-large member during his service in Europe. He again joined the US Army in 1948 and served in Korea until his discharge in 1952. He worked as a purification operator at American Zinc (later AMAX) in E. St. Louis, IL until 1981.
He was a meber of the Highland Evangelical United Church of Christ and a life member of VFW Post 5694 in Highland, IL. He enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking. After the death of his wife, he bagan doing scroll woodworking and made many gifts for his family and friends. Everyone who knew him knew how proud he was of his family and his military service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adele M. (nee Werner) McCune, whom he married December 11, 1946 in French Village, IL and who preceded him on October 4, 1994, parents, William R. and Bessie (nee Hurst) McCune; three sons, William S. who died on Jan. 20, 1984, Michael K. who died October 6, 1991 and a stillborn son who died in 1952, a special friend, Anna Doty, and brothers and sisters.
Surviving are two daughters, Marsha (Kenneth) Cline of Highland, IL and Maureen Neal (Kevin Christeson) of Lebanon, IL; a son Charles McCune, Jr of Mechanicsburg, PA; four grandsons, Fred McCune (Kelly Ratliff) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Frederick and Richard Neal, both of Lebanon, and Brandon (Misty) Cline of Nashville, TN; Three granddaughters, Brandy Adkins (Tony Sisk) of St. Albans, W.VA; Regina (Arron) Trimmer of Mechanicsburg, PA and Krystle (Donald) Klein of Highland, IL; four great granddaughters, Harmony Adkins, Scarlett Trimmer, Allison Sisk, and Kaylie McCune, three Great Grandsons, Twins Logan and Ryan cline and Logan McCune, a sister-in-law, Dolores Koskie of Caseyville, IL and many nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Meridith Funeral Home, 1223 Broadway, Highland, IL and from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 17th at Evangelical UCC in Highland, IL.
FUNERAL SERVICES: Wednesday, March 17th @ 11:00 A.M. at the Evangelical UCC with the Rev. Christopher Hill, Senior Pastor officiating. Burial with full Military Honors will be in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.
