Melvin J. “Jake” Stewart, 97, of Pocahontas, IL, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Highland Health Care Center, Highland, IL.
Jake was born March 20, 1915, to Frank and Lydia (Nee Hoyle) Stewart, in Pocahontas, IL. On November 8, 1940 he married Henrietta C. Long, in St. Charles, MO.
Jake worked for Laborers Local 677 for more than 50 years. During that time he worked for Baldor Electric, Greenville, IL for 7 years, school custodian for 2 years and Street Commissioner and Water Superintendent for the Village of Pocahontas for more than 20 years. He was a deputy sheriff for Bond County for several years and volunteered for the Pocahontas Fire Department. He retired from Village of Pocahontas in 1975.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Judith (Ronald) Lindley, Pocahontas, IL, Sharon (Dale) Lindley, Pocahontas, IL, Shelley (Brian) Brown, Greenville, IL; 13 grandchildren, Sheri (Dale) Compton, Christine (Bill) Linnabary, Julie (Israel) Vargas, April Stevenson, Suzanne (Jim) Arter, David (Shawna) Lindley, Jan (Mike) Koonce, Robert (Anna) Brown, Nichole Brown, Kayla Brown, Anna Brown, Connor Brown, Abbygayle Brown; 22 great-grandchildren, Eric Compton, Lindsay Compton, Rachel Compton, Leah Compton, Eric Linnabary, Jill Knox, Jacob Linnabary, Joseph Linnabary, Israel Daniel Vargas, Crystal Stevenson, Haley Stevenson, Brittany Arter, Jacob Arter, Dalton Lindley, Caleb Lindley, Adrea Lindley, Ethan Brown, Aaron Lindley, Aiden Linnabary, Joshua Vargas, Alyssa Brown, Hunter Brown; 1 sister, Martha Gene Miles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lydia Stewart; his wife, Henrietta Stewart; 1 son, Larry Eugene Stewart; 3 brothers, Arthur Stewart, Harold Stewart, Charles Stewart; 2 sisters, Velma B. Lutz, Minnie L. Stewart;

Visitation: Thursday, December 20, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, December 21, 2012, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Meridith Funeral Home, Pocahontas, IL.
