I remember Shane as an infant. I remember Shane when he sat upright clapping his hands and laughing. I remember him running around wildly less than a year old. And I remember Shane a few years old walking around under his blanket saying “We ghosts are hollow.” He had a wonderful imagination and drew amazing pictures. I received a letter from Shane in 1976, handwritten, in cursive, describing the fun things he was doing. It had amazing creatures he’d drawn. It was signed “youre brother Shane.” He was eight years old. I still have it. And I remember Shane as a young man working on cars and raising a family of his own. Shane was only three when we moved into Albion from the country. He would often visit and help our grandmother Clara Gillard at her house in the bottoms. He loved the country and working on cars and moved to live in the Gillard woods just outside of Albion. He worked for many years at the bicycle factory in Olney, IL. Two years ago Shane moved back into Albion to be near our mother. Shane had two beautiful daughters, Ariel and Gabrielle, a grandson Aaron and a new baby granddaughter Zoie. I’m so glad he got to know them. He is gone from us too soon. We love you Shane Evan Gillard.

Shane was the youngest and I the oldest. I left home when he was about three, so we didn’t have much time together. When I visited in 2018 I stayed with him at his place. He was recovering from a badly broken and infected leg, and it was wonderful how he remained positive and didn’t let the situation get him down. It was out best visit ever and I’m grateful it happened.
