      She requested no traditional funeral service or visitation. She will be honored by her family at Michael’s Restaurant on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a reception line and celebration of life service at 4 p.m.

      Marion A. Schwend (Nee Schmiedeke), 84, of Highland died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

      She was born on Jan. 18, 1928 in Highland to Herbert and Adele (Steiner) Schmiedeke. She lived in Marine in her early years before her family moved to Highland. She attended Highland schools and graduated from Highland High School in 1946. She married Raymond E. “Gene” Schwend in Highland on Sept. 11, 1948 and he survives in Highland.

      She and her husband were business partners in Highland Ready Mix Concrete for many years before they retired. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She was a past women’s golf champion at the Highland Country Club. She loved boating and teaching her children to water ski. In fact, she water-skied until she was 60. She loved to sew, do crafts and cook. She was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ.

      She and her husband enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, where they entertained many family members and friends over the years. She loved being with her children, grand children, great-grand children and their two family dogs.

      Survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Tom) Hammer of Highland, Terri (Steve) Holt of Highland, Jeanne (Gary) Huber of Trenton, one son, David (Carol) Schwend of Highland, and daughter-in-law Linda Schwend of Highland. One son, Richard Schwend, preceded her in death.

      She is survived by 12 grandchildren, Janean (Eric) Rehkemper, Michelle (Clinton) Tompkins, Vanessa (Michael) Conley, Jennifer (Jeff) Wright, Stephanie (Paul) Dehner, 

      Mindi (Nik) Kunz, Aaron (Joanna) Huber, Bret (Kim) Huber, Christopher Schwend, Quinn (Mandi) Huber, Amber (Cory) Lake and Kara Schwend. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren. One great-grandchild preceded her in death.

      She is also survived by one brother, Herbert “Lefty” Schmiedeke Jr. of Chicago. Brothers, Armin and Gerry Schmiedeke, and sisters, Ione and June Schmiedeke, Jane Lux and Dorothy Jennings, preceded her in death.

      She requested no traditional funeral service or visitation. She will be honored by her family at Michael’s Restaurant on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a reception line and celebration of life service at 4 p.m.

      In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Marion Schwend Memorial Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice at the Meridith Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
