  • Full Obituary

    R. Scott Merrow, 77, West Salem, IL formerly of Aurora, IL passed from this life to his heavenly home on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Richland Nursing and Rehab in Olney, IL.

He was born December 7, 1943, in Princeton, IN to Robert and Dorothy “Freeman” Merrow.  Dorothy passed a year after Scott’s birth, and he was raised by Henrietta “Penny” (Frank) Merrow.  Scott married his high school sweetheart Terri Wade at Faith Church of the Brethren in Batavia, IL on February 1, 1969.

He attended West Aurora High school with Terri where they played in the band together.  He loved all music and played several different instruments.

Scott was a veteran who served in the Navy.  He was an avid history freak, especially WWII history and was a member of DANK... A German American Club.

Scott retired after 39 years of driving an eighteen-wheeler.  Scott’s CB handle was the “Old Grizzly”.  He really loved family and was known as Grandpa to all his grandchildren’s friends.

Scott was a conversationalist and most of the time he made it around to talking about WII.

He had the heart of a Teddy Bear, but looked like a rough Biker/Truck driver.  His motto was

“If all I had in Life was music and books, I am alright”.

He is survived by one daughter; Sarah (Dean) Merrow-Roth, Montgomery, IL, one son; John (Karolyn “Kelly”) Merrow, Yorkville, IL, four grandchildren; Alekza Roth, Raquel “Rocky “Roth, Emily Glover and Kayley Glover.

He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Dorothy “Freeman” Merrow, second mother Henrietta “Penny” (Frank) and his wife Terri (Wade) Merrow.

Memorials may be made to the West Salem American Legion; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

    Casual dress is recommended.

Scott was an important, even overwhelming, part of our family. Though he looked rough and scary, he was bright and well-read and could converse intelligently on virtually any topic. He loved his family fiercely and was both independent and stubborn in his beliefs. We in the extended family always knew him as Old Grizzly, a nickname he enjoyed. We will all miss him and grieve his passing.

I dated Scott in high school. We enjoyed being in the band together. He was a great guy!

I learned about Scott’s death only today, and as the newsletter “writer” for West Aurora’s Class of 1961, I offer my heartfelt condolences to Scott’s family, especially Terri, his grandchildren, and his many friends. I will make sure his classmates know of the news and have the opportunity to celebrate Scott’s life.
