This tribute was placed on the Facebook page of the Oblong Children’s Christian Home and was written by Amy Kemp:

“Some phone calls are hard to take here at the Children’s Home, and maybe not for the reasons you might suppose. There is much brokenness in families, and any phone call with a distressed parent is tough. There is much faith placed in the charity of others to sustain us, and a phone call that speaks to an unexpected expense that could cripple a budget is tough. Today, though, the phone call came from the son of a wonderful woman whom I had spent many days with – even sharing a meal with her and her husband at their dining room table. My friend, Sue, passed away from leukemia on Sunday. That’s a tough call to take because visiting with her – a long-time contributor to this ministry – was a complete joy to me. I spent time on the phone cheering her and wrote letters and cards that I hoped would bless her. She did the same for me. I can hear her laugh, even as I write this tribute. I looked back in our database where I keep track of notes made about my visits with folks. I make them for my own remembrances so that when I go back again, I can follow-up about things we’ve talked about. Here is what I wrote on September 1, 2020. On that day, I visited Sue on her porch with her husband beside her. We sat outside because of COVID, and I was sure to keep my distance. I had received her permission in advance to come; in fact, she was thankful to have the visit. But, as I look back today at my notes, I find this thought: “I was tearful as I drove away. I thought that the visit would likely be my last with Bernard and Sue.” Indeed, it was. God love you, both. Sue, I know the Lord has welcomed you home. One day we’ll sit on the porch together again and laugh. I will look forward to that.”

Sue left a lasting legacy of love and friendship with me, Brian and our boys. When we were fairly new parents, Sue and Bernard came to our rescue. We all learned so much from Sue—quilting, picking berries, making apple dumplings, how to enjoy an ice cream bar on a hot day, how to demonstrate hospitality, and how being present and loving people matters. God blessed us by placing her in our path and we are better people because we knew her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Bernard, as well as your family.
