    William H. "Bill" Brown, 75, of Highland, IL, formerly of New Douglas, IL, died March 8, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.

    Mr. Brown was born April 10, 1934 at Old Ripley, IL to Albert and Mamie (Hamilton) Brown.

    He graduated from Highland High School in 1951 and attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale until being drafted into the U. S. Army in 1956.  While in the military, he served in Korea from 1957-1958.  After receiving his discharge, Mr. Brown completed his education at McKendree College, where he earned a Bachelor's of Education in 1959.

    On June 14, 1964, he married Ardith Hemann at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Douglas, IL.  She survives in Highland.

    Mr. Brown was a lifelong educator.  He taught Art in the Cahokia School District for nearly 30 years, where he also coached basketball, golf and baseball.  He loved all sports and particularly enjoyed following local high school basketball, the Fighting Illini, and the St. Louis Cardinals.  He was also an avid golfer.  Bill was a gregarious man who never met a stranger.  He loved the family farm, spending time with his family and friends and was particularly proud of being "PaPa" to his two granddaughters.

    He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Madison County Retired Teachers Association, and was a former member of the Highland Country Club.

    He is survived by two daughters: Elizabeth Brown, Clayton, MO, and Rebecca Brown, Highland, IL; one son: Jeffrey Brown and daughter-in-law Nikki Brown, Highland, IL; two granddaughters: Ellie and Katie Brown, Highland, IL; an uncle: John (Alma) Hamilton, Brighton, IL; and many loving cousins, especially Robert Hamilton, St. Charles, MO.

    Bill was pre-deceased by his parents, and one sister: Sarah Brown, in infancy.

    Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, IL, and 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Douglas, IL.
