Lillian Dorothy Whinnery, 92, of Lebanon, IL, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2019.

She lived her life out at home and was able to see and enjoy her spring flowers in bloom, and sit outside her porch with her cats.

She was born March 6, 1927, in Lebanon, IL, to Vladimir J. and Amalie Podesva. She married Lewis A. Whinnery on December 24, 1946, and later divorced in 1979. Lillian was born on the estate her parents established in Lebanon.

As a young girl, she rode her bicycle around town with her sister, and they sold fruit and vegetables from the orchard and gardens. Lil attended Lebanon grade school and graduated from Lebanon Community high school. She worked at the candle factory through her years in high school. Bearing 5 children in various states between 1947 and 1961, she and the children returned to Lebanon in 1964.

Lil was a self-taught Master Gardener and loved to make flower arrangements from her flower gardens. She then worked at Select Candles, Inc., and also at Vans Discount in Lebanon. She may be remembered best as one of the kitchen cooks at the Lebanon grade school. Lil was truly an amazing woman.

Surviving are her children, Joseph (Debra) Whinnery, Rockford, IL, Edward (Rigmor) Whinnery, Stavenger, Norway, James (Barb) Whinnery, Highland, IL, Linda (David) Redding-Schmidt, West Lafayette, IN, Susan (Patrick) Stevenson, St. Charles, MO; 2 grandchildren, Nathan (Katina) Whinnery, and Daniel (Erica) Douglas; 5 great grandchildren, Evania and Ezra Whinnery, Willa, Pearl, and Silas Douglas; Niece, Patricia (Richard) Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vladimir and Amalie Podesva; Brother, William Podesva; Sister, Mary (Dewey) Morehead.

A memorial service will be held in May.

For anyone wishing to make a contribution in her memory, they may be made to the Four Hearts Animal Foundation, PO Box 361, O’Fallon, IL 62269, or to the Humane Society of St. Clair County.
