Fred Vaughn, 90, of Pocahontas, IL, died Friday, February 26, 2016, at his residence with his family by his side.
Fred was born November 9, 1925 to Fred and Nannie (Nee Huddleston) Vaughn in Pocahontas, IL. On August 27, 1949, he married Helen Dickerson in Pocahontas, AR.
He signed up for the Army after his junior year in high school. He served from March 1944 to June 1946, spending time in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater of World War II. He was a member of Laborers International Union, Local 397. He served on the Village Board of Pocahontas and was a volunteer fireman for many years. Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman; he loved to go camping and was always taking his grandchildren and any other kids that wanted to go. He loved to spend time with his family and play cards. When they were younger, he and his wife would go dancing on Saturday nights. He helped anyone he could around town. He was a father figure to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Nannie Vaughn; his brothers and sisters, Clarence, George and Leonard Vaughn, Dolly Vaughn, Grace Penoff, Dora Zaloga.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Vaughn, Pocahontas, IL; daughter, Nancy (Richard) Mueller, Pocahontas, IL; granddaughter, Jennifer (Brian) Wesselmann; great-grandchildren, Emily, Zachary and Madeline Wesselmann; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Pocahontas Old Ripley Ambulance Service or St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
