Joan M. Spengel (nee Frey), 74, of Highland, IL died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.
Joan was born November 14, 1938 in Highland, IL to Nelson J. and Eleanor S. (nee Buehne) Frey. She married Forrest “Ed” House in 1961 and he died in 1968. She then married Robert L. “Bob” Spengel on October 23, 1971 at St. Paul Church, Highland, IL.
Joan was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion and VFW. She worked at Capitol Airlines, National Airport Communications, Washington, D.C., United Airlines, Dulles International Airport, Fairfax, VA, Basler Electric Co, and Sears Roebuck Store in Highland, IL. Joan was an assistant at the Spengel Funeral Home and then later, the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home for several years. Joan was an avid Bowler – in her early years before her illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson J. and Eleanor S. Frey.
Joan is survived by her husband Robert L. “Bob” Spengel, Highland, IL; two children, Darren J. (Michelle) Spengel, Affton, MO, Deborah A. (Mark) Ginther, San Antonio, TX; three grandchildren Daniel R. Ginther and Nicholas S. Ginther of San Antonio, TX, Abigail M. Spengel of Affton, MO; two brothers, James Frey, Highland, IL, Thomas Frey, Denison, TX; one sister, Judith A. (Patrick) Dunne, Lubbock, TX; one niece, Jennifer Mettler-Monger; one Nephew, Matthew Mettler.
Memorials may be offered to St. Vincent DePaul Society for the needy.
Visitation: Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and Monday, March 11, 2013 from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at the Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial Monday, March 11, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Charles A. Edwards officiating.
Interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Highland, IL.
