    Robert J. “Bob” Schmitt, 93, of Lebanon, IL, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at BRIA of Mascoutah, surrounded by his family.

    He was born on September 27, 1930, in Lebanon, IL, to Joseph and Anna (nee Schaefer) Schmitt.

    Bob was born and raised in Lebanon, graduating from Lebanon High School in 1948. He went on to graduate from Ranken Technical College as a certified Electrician and Radio/TV Technician.

    He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lebanon, being a part of their Men’s Club and working the fish fry every Friday during Lent. For 50 plus years, Bob owned and operated his own business as a Licensed Electrician, also serving on the Lebanon Fire Department for 29 years as a Firefighter and EMT, retiring as Fire Chief. He was a lifetime member of the Lebanon Singers Society, served on the board for Lebanon Community School District #9, and the board for Horner Park.

    Bob enjoyed fishing, camping, and duck hunting. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and always made it a point to go to his grandkid’s sports events. Bob was a jokester; loving to make people laugh, he always had a joke for everything. A kind and generous man, Bob would help anyone he could, always offering to fix things for those in his community.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Schmitt; wife, Merhlene (nee Myers) Schmitt; son, Joe Schmitt; daughter, Lisa Suydam; son-in-law, Keith Suydam; grandson, Jason Schmitt, in infancy; siblings, Helen Noll, Florence Wuench, Marie Liening, Mildred Dodds, Eugene Schmitt, Rudolph Schmitt, Otmar Schmitt; multiple brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

    Bob is survived by his son, Bobby (Cheri) Schmitt, Lebanon, IL; grandchildren, Nathan Schmitt, Tyson Schmitt, Haley Schmitt, Joey Schmitt, Amy Suydam, Brandi Suydam, Kyle (Michelle) Suydam, Ryan Suydam, Taylor (Karlee) Schmitt, Mallory Schmitt; great grandchildren, Karsyn, Owen, Nova; multiple nieces and nephews.

    Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Lebanon Fire Department.

    Visitation: Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 9:00 to 11:00 am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lebanon, IL
