    Herbert Bernard Durbin, Sr., 88, of Breese, IL, formerly of Highland, IL died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Breese Nursing Home, Breese, IL surrounded by his family. 

    Herb was born April 9, 1924, to Herbert B. and Mae Elsie (Nee Matoushek) Durbin, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO.  On August 6, 1949, he married Mary Imelda Bowling at Our Lady of Providence Catholic Church, Brownstown, IN. 

    Herb was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL, Highland Knights of Columbus Council 1580, 4th Degree Assembly and American Legion, Post 439.  

    After high school he went into the Army Air Corp. and served during WWII.  After serving his country, he attended Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH, and St. Louis University.  

    While working as a Cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency, which he did for 35 years, he was involved in the Choir at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Edwardsville, IL. He was a Boy Scout Leader and spent a lot of time actively involved with the Knights of Columbus, Edwardsville, IL. 

    He moved his family to Highland, IL in 1968, so his children could attend St. Paul Catholic High School.  Throughout his working career he worked numerous jobs, several at the same time to support his family. 

    He loved the fact that he had a large family.  For many years he was a league bowler and he was an avid Cubs fan.  He enjoyed travelling with his wife, Mary, and her brothers and sisters. 

    He and his wife really enjoyed living at The Villas at St. James in Breese, IL. 

    Herb is survived by his wife, Mary I. Durbin; 11 children, Mary Karen (Austin) Campbell, Herbert B. (Dorothy) Durbin, Jr., (twin), Stephen J. (Dr. Judy Keeven) Durbin (twin), Michael J. (Mary Kay) Durbin, Patrick T. (Vera) Durbin, Gregory J. (special friend Carolyn Baldwin) Durbin, Theresa A. (Terry Moore) Durbin, Jane F. (Robert) McDonald, Mark D. Durbin, Christopher P. (Jody) Durbin, Kevin A. (Susan) Durbin; 32 grandchildren, Matthew W. (Ann) Campbell, Andrea (Bill) Arnold, Leslie (Kurt) Campbell-Driesner, Allison (Brady Mills) Campbell, Lauren Campbell, Herbert B. (Kimberly) Durbin, III, Jeffrey Durbin, Stephen M. (Cathy) Durbin, Tracy Durbin, Dominic (Erica) Durbin, Rita (Rev. Christopher) Davis, Aaron (Amber) Durbin, Colin (Jamie) Durbin, Adam Durbin, Andrew (Beth) Durbin, Audrey Durbin, Nathaniel Durbin, Keegan Moore, Vincent Moore, Valerie Moore, Trevor Bauchens, Regina (Tom) Hladick, Robert McDonald, Benjamin McDonald, Gregory McDonald, Aaron Lange, Kyle Durbin, Chelsea Durbin, Cameron Durbin, Jordan Durbin, Alexandra Durbin, Liam Durbin; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mary Ruth (William) Schafer; many nieces and nephews.

     Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert B. and Mae E. Durbin; 3 brothers, Howard Durbin, Robert Durbin, James Durbin; 1 daughter, Kathleen Durbin, 1 son, Lawrence Durbin; 2 grandsons, Shad Bauchens and Shawn Durbin.

     Memorials may be made to KNOM Alaska Radio Mission, Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska, Fairbanks, AK, or Highland Knights of Columbus, Council 1580. 

    Visitation: Monday, March 4, 2013, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 8:00 to 9:30 am at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, IL.  The Knights of Columbus will be doing a Chalice Ceremony at 6:00 pm and the American Legion will be doing their service at 6:30 pm.

     Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, IL.
