    • Full Obituary

On Wednesday October 12, 2022, Billy Dale McCarty of Crossville passed away.  He is preceded in death by his father, Billy Ray “Sam” McCarty.  His mother, sister, brother-in-law, nephews, and niece will keep his memory alive.

Billy was born in Carmi, IL and moved around to many states as a child with his family.  For a few years he lived in the Netherlands, where his father was stationed in the Air Force.  He and his sister loved to reminisce on their times there, and the many interesting places they saw, and things they learned while overseas.  He attended high school in Grayville, and went to college at USI in Evansville, IN.

Most of all, Billy loved music.  He played the guitar and helped to teach his nephew how to play from a young age.  He and his three nephews enjoyed talking about music together.  He liked to share information about the greatest guitar players of all time.  He also loved animals, and was particularly close to his beagle “Steve,” named after Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Billy liked football and was a truly loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings.  Through their ups and downs, he could be found wearing a purple Vikings cap.  Even in his last days, while in hospice care, he watched the Vikings games with his sister and brother-in-law.  They won on Sunday the 9th.

Billy was known for his acts of generosity; he was a very giving person.  Those who knew Bill well, know he wanted to live a unique life.  He was not a religious person, although he did like to talk and read about the beliefs of peoples from other countries and times.  He wanted his family and friends to remember him as a fun-loving rocker.  Therefore, if you would like to memorialize Billy’s life, at 5:00 pm on Saturday October 22, 2022, please have two-minutes of silence and play his favorite song Rockin’ in the Free World.

Bill and I were friends for more than 50 years. He was first to get his license so we had wheels in Sammy Jo’s Oldsmobile. We were in the senior play, and graduated together . We both had a love for music and mustangs. We talked hours on this. We bought 20 acres together, thought we would grow sweet corn. The raccoons really liked it. Bill loved to play poker and draw. He enjoyed his life and would send pictures home with you . I will miss you my friend.
