    Vernon Oard Snead, 93, was born in St. Louis, MO on September 29, 1921 and died August 26, 2015. 

    Vernon grew up on a farm near Anna, IL and attended a one-room school house.  He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1942 and promptly joined the U.S. Air Corps with assignment in the Asiatic Pacific.  He completed 22 years of active duty and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel.  Among decorations received were: Air Force Commendation Medal, Solomon Island Campaign, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, National Defense and World War II.

    In 1964 he became Vice President for Business Affairs at McKendree College, Lebanon, IL.  He was deeply involved in the College process of regaining its accreditation by the North Central Association – a goal attained in April 1970.

    Starting 1961, Vernon and his family became part of Lebanon, IL.  He served two terms as alderman on the City Council and one term as Treasurer.  He also served on the Library Board for 10 years and was active in the Methodist Church, Senior Citizens, Meals on Wheels and Rotary.

    Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Doris Snead; parents, Earl and Lela Snead; sister, Ava Marie Perfetti; brother, Forrest Snead.

    In 1946, he married Doris Evelyn Kastner, of Chicago and they reared five children to become worthy citizens.  Surviving are his children, Michael, San Francisco, CA, Nancy Heldmann, Elgin, IL, Greg (Linda), St. Louis, MO, Debra (Diane Pranske), Denver, CO, Patricia (Todd) Rock, Temple, TX; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. 

    Memorials may be made to the Lebanon Public Library, 314 West St. Louis Street, Lebanon, IL, 62254. 

    Visitation: Wednesday, September 2, 2015, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at 1st United Methodist Church, Lebanon, IL.

    Funeral: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Church.

    Clergy: Rev. Peter Wehrly, Pastor.

    Interment: College Hill Cemetery
