      Lillian M. Wetzel, 80 of Highland died Monday, January 8, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Highland.

      A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Wednesday at St. Paul Catholic Church with Fr. James Palakudy, Parochial Vicar at St. Paul Church, and Fr. Robert Spriggs, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Effingham, IL concelebrating

      Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

      Mrs. Wetzel was born Oct. 20, 1926 in St. Louis to John and Mary (Cvelbar) Gregory.  On August 26, 1950, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Louis, she married John P. Wetzel and he survives.  Mrs. Wetzel had worked as an office clerk at Lewis-Howe Co. in St. Louis and Bendix in South Bend, Ind., before taking up duties as a homemaker.  She moved to Highland in 1958 with her husband and children.  In 1972 she joined the First National Bank as a clerk in the bookkeeping department, retiring in 1989.  She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Anne's Altar Society and the American Slovenian Catholic Union.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren.

      She also is survived by a daughter, Maryjo (Jim) Bielong of Pierron; three sons, Jack (Catherine) Wetzel of Dallas, Texas, Jerry Wetzel of Gainesville, Fla., and Michael (Brenda) Wetzel of Highland; a brother, John (Dorothy) Gregory of St. Louis; seven grandchildren, Bridget and Michael Dressel, Cate and John Wetzel, and Brett, Tanner and Baylee Wetzel.

      She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Raymond Gregory.

      Memorials may be made to the Pregnancy Care Center, Highland or to the St. Paul Educational Foundation.
