    Jerome Alphonse Schleper, 65, of Pocahontas, IL, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Greenville Regional Hospital.

    Jerome was born in Highland on December 17, 1948, to Anthony John “Tony” Schleper and Josephine Ann “Josie” (nee Rehkemper) Schleper.  He married Linda Wegman on August 4, 1972, at St. Paul Church, Highland, IL.  She survives in East Pierron, “Millersburg.”

    He graduated from St. Paul School in 1966.  He then worked at Highland Supply and on his uncles’ farms, Ed and Ferd Rehkemper.  He also worked for General Motors, St. Louis, MO, on Union Blvd.  He was medically retired from General Motors in 1981.  Jerome was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  In his medical retirement, he enjoyed working on lawn mower engines and chain saws.

    He was a member of Local 25 UAW, Highland VFW, Breese American Legion, St. Nicholas Church, Pocahontas.

    He served in the Vietnam War, April 18, 1969 to 1971.  He received the rank of Army Sergeant E5.  He served in Germany from Sep 17, 1969 to Aug 21, 1970.  He then served in Vietnam, from Oct 4, 1970 to Apr 10, 1971, in areas of Vietnam- –Phan Thiet and Tuy Nog.  He served his Army training at Ft Lewis, Washington.

    He is also survived by a son, Joseph (Natasha) Schleper of Maryland; 2 daughters, Lori (Terry) Self of Highland, IL, and Jennifer (Craig) Literski of O’Fallon, IL; 7 grandchildren, Hayden, Holden, and Hudson Schleper, Gavin and Madison Self, Carly and Carson Literski; 3 sisters, Dee (Russ) Singler of Carlyle, IL, Sister Loretta Schleper (PHJC) of Gary, IN, Mary (Mike) Rapien of Highland, IL; 2 brothers, Gervase (Mary) Schleper of Breese, IL, and James (Sandra) Schleper of Pierron, IL.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony John “Tony” (Jul 22, 1958) and Josephine Ann “Josie” (Jul 2, 2009) Schleper; his father and mother-in-law, Edward (Feb 3, 2006) and Irene (Jul 8, 2000) Wegman; 1 sister-in-law, Nancy Wegman (Aug 5, 2002); 2 brothers-in-law, Kenneth Wegman (Oct 27, 1979) and James Wegman (Sep 30, 2014).

    Memorials may be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Pocahontas, IL, the MS Society, and Bond County Hospice.

    Visitation:  Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 8:00 to 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Pierron, IL.
