Dr. Robert “Bob” Marshall, 74, of Effingham, IL passed away on February 15, 2020 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York, surrounded by the love and support of his three daughters during his final days.

Robert was born on April 30, 1945 to Dr. Glenn Marshall and Genevieve (nee Lee) Marshall in Denver, Colorado. The family, that includes his sister Glenda (nee Marshall) Lane, settled in Effingham, IL where Robert grew up playing football, basketball, baseball, and admiring the work of his physician father.

After graduating high school, Robert attended DePauw University and Northwestern University School of Medicine. As a cardiologist, Robert dedicated much of his career to caring for veterans in VA clinics and hospitals in northern California as well as Mississippi. His deep scientific curiosity also led him to conduct years of cardiology research at UCLA and UC Berkeley.

An accomplished piano and trumpet player, music sparked great joy in Robert’s life. He filled his home with opera and classical music.

More than anything, though, Robert adored his daughters and grandkids. Later in life he’d say, “My favorite people call me grandpa.” An encouraging and loving presence to his family, Robert is survived by his children, Roslyn (Andy) Paine, Denver, CO, Anne (Casey) Marshall-Chalmers, Louisville, KY, Laura (Evan) Lison, Chatham, NJ; grandchildren, Ian and Drew Paine, Maria and Robert Chalmers and Madeline and Nathan Lison; his sister, Glenda (Larry) Lane, Naples, FL; and mother of his three children, Rosalie Marshall, Piedmont, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Genevieve Marshall.

In lieu of flowers, Robert’s children invite you to donate to Robert’s beloved DePauw University and the organization, Doctors Without Borders.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Marion Christian Church, northwest of West Salem, IL. Inurnment in the Marion Christian Church Cemetery will follow the service.

Ingram-Meridith Funeral Home of Albion is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.

Condolences are reviewed and published within 24 hours.

      Doc,
I must admit I was intimidated the first day I came to your home as your caregiver two years ago. You sat in your big leather chair, with classical music was roaring in the distance. When I said, Hello Bob, you said, “please call me Dr. Marshall”. I did for a while but then shortened it to “Doc”. You finally warmed up to me after a few short weeks and this was the beginning of our beautiful friendship.
I loved listening to your countless stories from the past. From your football playing days in high school to your trumpet playing days while at Bellevue Hospital in NYC. You said your greatest accomplishments were playing with “The Great Renold Shilke” (master trumpeter), and you beamed with pride when talking about your loving family. I loved our long talks about medicine and will always laugh at the time you tutored me in Microbiology. You were so proud that I finished with a B+, without taking chemistry for 30 years.
Thank you for touching my life in every way. You were my hero, someone I looked up to for guidance, advice, and wisdom. I enjoyed being your caregiver in every way and couldn’t of asked for a better friend!
You will always be with me throughout my nursing journey.
      May you rest in peace.
      I love you, Christi

      Dear Dr. Marshall,

It is 3/3/2022 today, I somehow was searching to find out as to ho you might be doing after you left VA medical center at Jackson, Mississippi.

You were my teacher during my first few months at the VA hospital, always affable and ready to help trainees like me. Your calm demeanor and knowledge both impressed upon me as to how a knowledgeable physician would and should behave and be like.

Though you retired shortly after my training began, I shall always remember the training and knowledge imparted by you on me.

Thank you for everything Dr. Marshall. You would be proud to know that I am a successful Interventional Cardiologist after having published more than 25 manuscripts and plenty of experience behind my name. All thanks to the foundation knowledge gained from you.

Thank you for being a teacher you were.

      Rest in peace Dr. Marshall.
