Dorothy “Dee Lee” Winterrowd (Nee Faulkner), 88, of Lebanon, IL, died peacefully Thursday, September 25, 2014, with her family by her side.  Dee Lee was born August 21, 1926, in Granite City, IL.  She was the youngest of 5 girls born to Harry and Kate Faulkner.

Her passion for music began at the age of five when she started taking piano and music theory lessons from a local music teacher.  Dee Lee attended McKendree University where she obtained a bachelor degree in music in 1947.  She taught music and health at Vandalia (Illinois) Junior High for two years.

In 1949, she married her college sweetheart, Lewis Winterrowd.  At the beginning of the 1950 school year, Dee Lee began teaching third grade in the Lebanon public school system.  A year later she began teaching music for first through eighth grades until 1952.  For the next 14 years, Dee Lee devoted herself to raising her three children.

In the fall of 1966, the Lebanon school board approached Dee Lee and offered her a parttime teaching position as the primary grade music teacher.  During this time she started directing short musical programs for each class.  She continued teaching and directing musical programs until her retirement in 1982.

Dee Lee was the first President of the Lebanon Band Boosters, director of the First United Methodist Church children’s choir, past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past leader of the local Girl Scout Troop, and a former member of the McKendree University Alumni Board.

Dee Lee was a longtime supporter of McKendree University as a Bearcat Booster, patron of the Fine Arts Series and an original member of the William McKendree Society.  Additionally, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lebanon.

She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Winterrowd, on October 13, 1981.  Dee Lee is survived by her husband, Lewis Winterrowd, Lebanon, IL, to whom she was married for 65 years.  Also surviving are a son, Bruce (Claudia) Winterrowd, Naperville, IL; a daughter, Sherry (Vernon) Christ, Lebanon, IL; four grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Grzenia, Adam Winterrowd, Tim (Trisha) Christ, and Ben Winterrowd. Her sister, Catherine Nelson, St. Louis, MO, also survives along with numerous nieces and nephews.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dorothy Faulkner Winterrowd Scholarship at McKendree University.
